External data to import in to GIS
Hello All,
I wonder if members are able to share where they find their publicly available stats to plot on GIS maps.
Alice From Sovereign Housing was able to point me to data.police.uk ( I can not post an external link as I need to be a member for more than 7 days, but if you Google it you will find it) to get crime data for the areas I am interested in, this includes longitude and latitude. The CSV files gave me locations of offences recorded month by month including ASBs.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Regards
Andrew

Re: External data to import in to GIS
Hi Andrew,
A data set we use, that has proved very useful, is the IMD- Indices of Multiple Deprivation. This data is published every few years, the latest being 2015. In here you can see all the LSOAs ranked by their deprivation overall or by particular domains such as education.
The data is completely free and can be downloaded from here: data.gov.uk/dataset/english-indices-of-deprivation-2015-lsoa-level
I hope this helps!

Re: External data to import in to GIS
Hi Andrew,
There is plenty of open source spatial data online. These are some of the sources we use:
- Ordnance Survey OpenData (https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/business-and-government/products/finder.html?Licensed for=OpenData (Free)&withdrawn=on) In here you will find updated and trustworthy information about Postcode units, administrative boundaries at all levels, topographic maps in low resolution, network datasets, etc.
- Data.gov.uk (https://data.gov.uk/data/search?theme-primary=Mapping) it is also a good source of information; you will find all types of official datasets from a broad range of organizations
- The Open Geography Portal (http://geoportal.statistics.gov.uk/) provides spatial and statistical information from the Office of National Statistics (ONS)
- DEFRA provides access to layers about protected areas (http://jncc.defra.gov.uk/protectedsites/SACselection/gis_data/terms_conditions.asp)
I hope these have been helpful!
Kind regards,
Llorenc Guasp

Re: External data to import in to GIS
Hi Andrew,
Nomis is also quite a good source for Census and labour market stuff (https://www.nomisweb.co.uk/)
The UK Data Service has lots of data too but I imagine there'll be a lot of overlap between all of these (https://www.ukdataservice.ac.uk/)
The police data is a great source. I'd just be wary of taking anything as an absolute result from it - the X and Ys are generally not geocoded in exactly the right place. Which is why you sometimes find that a lot of crime has occurred in a police station!

Re: External data to import in to GIS
Emma is correct, the XYs for the police data will sometimes show crime as taking place in unusual locations. This is because the police want each incident to be anonymous so scramble the coordinates whilst ensuring the point stays within the correct street location. Essentially the data should only be viewed at certain scales to avoid any confusion around locational accuracy.

Thank you all for your replies. I will take on board what you say about crimes being committed in police stations! i will try and identify these, I will put this information as caveats, Gloucestershire constabulary especially puts location as unknown. I am going to spend the next few days reviewing and pulling down the data from the suggested sites.
